MODE/PNLC Philippines participates in 29th FAO Asia-Pacific Regional Conference

Bangkok, Thailand - The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) held the 29th Regional Conference for Asia and The Pacific (FAORAP Conference) last March 26-31, in Bangkok, Thailand. Around 150 delegates from 33 countries participated in the conference.

MODE/PNLC Philippines participated as an observer and was represented by Aurora Regalado, Managing Trustee of MODE and co-convener of PNLC Philippines.

Other civil society groups represented were Action Aid, AsiaDHRRA, East Asia Rice Working Group (EARWG), Focus on the Global South, Pesticide Action Network in Asia and the Pacific (PAN AP), Asian Farmers’ Association (AFA), Southeast Asian Council for Food Security and Fair Trade (SEACON) and Third World Network (TWN).

A joint CSO statement was read at the ministerial conference on March 30 and copies were distributed to the delegates. (CSO Statement).

The topics discussed during this conference were: (1) policies, strategies and technical options for coping with water scarcity; (2) agribusiness and competitive agro industries in the context of globalization and free trade; (3) aid for trade initiative and the role of FAO; (4) regional state of food and agriculture; (5) food safety and trade; and (6) trans-boundary animal disease.

The next FAORAP regional conference will be held in May 2010. The delegation from South Korea expressed its intention to host the 30th regional conference.
